Yep – the book meme

08Jun10

I was leaving this meme – *up my sleeve* or for a less inspired day, but I’m at home with ms14 and taking her to the doctor soon, and I fear that I’ll get caught up in family matters and not have time to do this later….so here goes.

Do you snack while reading? Depends…one of the times I do read is over breakfast so there is food around.

What is your favourite drink while reading? Tea – Madura loose – in a pot.

Do you tend to mark your books while you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you? No I don’t mark books, if I need to remember something I’ll make a note….or tell myself to make a note, but not make it. It’s a bit different if you are reading for study – often have a notepad right next to me – or post it notes.

How do you keep your place? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book open flat? generally bookmark – whatever is at hand. Old shopping list, a bookmark, one of the free postcards, often a leaf when I’m camping. I frequently fall asleep in bed with a book, so they do sometimes end up closed or flat open or down the side of the bed. I don’t dog ear.

Fiction, non-fiction or both? Fiction generally.

Do you tend to read to the end of a chapter or can you stop anywhere? I stop anywhere…I don’t mean to…it’s just the way I am.

Are you the type of person to throw a book across the room or on the floor if the author irritates you? No I’ve never done that. I do not finish books if they don’t grab me…I used to think that if you started a book you had to finish it…not so.

If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop and look it up right away? Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. It doesn’t happen that often – maybe that’s because I read mostly fiction? Yep- context helps.

What are you currently reading? Book 3 of the Millenium Trilogy.

What is the last book you bought? Last week – got ‘Let the great world spin’ – from the Book Depository. Recommended by a friend.

Do you have a favourite time/place to read? I love my breakfast reading, my lying in bed reading. Happy to read in most places really.

Do you prefer series books or stand-alones? Not usually as series type person – I don’t read fantasy or detective/crime books, but of course I am loving the Millenium series, so I am open to a series.

Is there a specific book or author you find yourself recommending over and over? I have been in a bookgroup for over five years, and I love that I read books I possibly would not have read. I do recommend books if someone asks, or it comes up in conversation, or I’m talking about a book I’m currently reading.

How do you organize your books (by genre, title, author’s last name, etc.)? I clump books together by author and that’s about it. In our main bookshelf in the lounge we have different subjects clumped together – husband’s design books and car books, gallery catalogues, old children’s annuals, the classics – just a loose organisation. But then there are bookshelves in all the bedrooms as well.

Ha ha Kate! Got two of these chairs – they need re-upholstering – gold vinyl! Carl fished the ladder out of a rubbish skip – it still has its handwritten tag with serial number written on it.

I love the ladder…I have been on the lookout for a good bookcase ladder for a long time. There is one that converts to a chair but at $250 it’s just a wee bit too much for what I’m after.
