Family fun #roadtrip to see Jack White

Jack White: swagger with substance Bernard Zeul’s review in SMH

setlist from 26 July Hordern Pavillion

things I liked about our roadtrip to see Jack White

  • the drive up – rush after work and school – into the prospect of a delay near Mittagong because of a car accident – road was queued for 9km, but it was fine and just heavy traffic by the time we got to it.
  • sitting in the car munching on savoury pull-aparts for dinner – no stopping at any crappy fast food for me (and the kids were OK with it)
  • driving into a pretty wild storm, that thankfully blew over. Lightning was pretty spectacular
  • getting a park close to the Hordern Pavillion – “the power of positive parking”
  • Isabel meeting up with Anne and her sister – and so spending the whole evening in the mosh pit!
  • the concert!
  • Jack White had his boy band (he is currently touring with an all female band and an all male band) The band apparently doesn’t know who is playing until that morning – good for spontaneity.
  • Jack White doesn’t use a set list – again – great for spontaneity. Although I had had a good look at set lists on the web for the last month or so – so I had a fair idea what he would be playing.
  • I love that the roadies dress in suits with hats. When Carl and I saw Dead Weather at the ANU uni bar a year or so back it was the same thing – suits for roadies. They look so smart!!!
  • getting back to freezing Bowral house at 1am, turning the heating on full blast, putting all electric blankets to high and drinking hot chocolate!!
  • it was lovely just doing it as a family. I love the kid’s friends and boy and girl friends – but this was nice just doing it “en familie”
  • Just before Jack White came on – one of his roadies announced that it would be great if people could watch the show in 3D and not from behind a 3 inch screen. They took photos and encouraged you to download them from his website. Cool idea – so throughout the post is a selection (mine is the “sold out” photo!).
  • Loved, loved the band – the drummer was the coolest, and the guy playing harmonica, mandolin, guitar – I hope your cold gets better soon (he blew his nose on a big hankie quite a few times during the gig).

so cool, so much fun, so glad we did it!

Loved that he played so much from Blunderbuss, but also Dead Weather and White Stripes. Was a blast!
