Flourish

05Jun11

Read an article today about happiness by ex president of the APA – Martin Seligman. His new book ‘Flourish’ talks about finding joy in accomplishments.
His five crucial elements to well being are:

  • Positive emotion – experiencing joy and pleasure
  • Engagement – being consciously involved in activities
  • Relationships – having enjoyable transactions
  • Meaning – a purposeful narrative about our lives
  • Accomplishment -achieving goals and following core values

“Well-being cannot exist just in your own head. Well-being is a combination of feeling good as well as actually having meaning, good relationships and accomplishment”

Interesting comments by the author of Flourish, what do you think?
While we were walking today my two daughters and I discussed the ups and downs of life – & had two important things we value – ability to love (including yourself) and allowing yourself to be loved. There were a couple of other values – I might need to blog about. Will you read Flourish?

How lovely to be talking through these types of things with your daughters. I find walking does enhance these types of conversations.
Not sure if I’ll read Flourish- maybe if I can get it from the library. I am not a good finisher, so perhaps I would feel better sometimes if I did finish and accomplish *things*

  2. I love Martin Seligman and his work on Positive Psychology. I did not realise he was a past president of the APA though! I’ll have to keep my eyes out for ‘flourish’.
